The West Hempstead Fire Department responded to
the report of a car into a building on Tuesday, August 3, at
Hempstead Turnpike and Mayfair Avenue. A elderly driver had
apparently stepped on the gas pedal rather than the brake and
smashed into the rear wall of a discount store at the location. The
storefront glass was shattered, but no one inside the building was
injured. The driver declined to be transported to the hospital. The
Building Department was called to the scene to verify the stability
of the wall.

two-car MVA

On Friday, August 13, 2010, the Lindenhurst Fire Dept.
was called to S. 8th St. and Montauk Hwy. for a two-car MVA with overturn
and entrapment. A Ford Taurus and Saturn sedan collided, rolling the Saturn
over at least once. The Saturn came to rest after it rolled into a boat
storage yard through the fence with a post going through the windshield and
missing the driver. The crew from Heavy Rescue 1-6-5 stabilized the car
while an ALS provider entered the vehicle to treat the driver. The crew then
put cutters to work to cut all the posts on the car and removed the roof and
cut away the fence post that had entered the car. The driver was extricated
in about 25 minutes and was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital with
non-life threatening injuries by Lindenhurst Ambulance 1-6-7. Lindenhurst
also responded with Ambulance 1-6-17, Engine 1-6-3, Fire Police 1-6-8,
