Firemen’s Association of the State
of NY & The Home Depot
Launched Successful CO Detector
Safety Education
Campaign to Raise Awareness of
Amanda’s Law

Through
a new public safety education effort between the
Firemen’s Association of the State of New York and The
Home Depot, special safety workshops, which included
carbon monoxide (CO) detector giveaways, were held at
select stores in suburban areas throughout the state of
New York on March 6, 2010. At The Home Depot locations
in Rensselaer/Albany, Henrietta/Rochester,
Cicero/Syracuse, and in Syosset, Long Island,
firefighters were on hand to provide safety advice and
tips on proper CO detector installation and maintenance.
The event also included fire trucks, the distribution of
recruitment materials, product demonstrations, and a
kids’ workshop.
The campaign was designed to not only raise awareness of
the importance of CO safety, but also to shed light on
“Amanda’s Law,” which went into effect on February 22nd.
The law requires that a CO detector be installed in
nearly all residential structures in the state of NY,
regardless of the date of a building’s construction or
sale. The law was named after 16-year old Amanda Hansen
of West Seneca, NY who lost her life last January due to
carbon monoxide leaking from a defective boiler.

serving together in the department, the DeRiso's voices are well-known at
the annual Greenlawn Fireman's Fair. Both father and son have been manning
the microphone for many years in the control booth with announcements as
they overlook the fairgrounds.
