Mays Landing Brush Fire Involves Structure

 

On June 27, 2010, the Mays Landing Volunteer Company, Station 18-1, was dispatched to Reega Avenue and the bike path for a report of a brush fire. The Mays Landing Fire Company and the New Jersey Forest Fire Service responded. NJFFS Unit C-26, District Warden Ken Badger was the first to arrive on location and advised dispatch the fire was deep in the woods off West Jersey Avenue and was a fully involved structure fire.


The new fire location put the fire in the local of the Cologne Volunteer Fire Company, Station 18-5, who was dispatched to the structure fire. Mays Landing Tanker 1819 arrived on location with Captain Shawn Slocum who established command. Tanker 1819's crew stretched approximately 400' of two-and-a-half-inch hand line and began suppressing the structure fire, while C-26 suppressed the wildland fire. Mays Landing Engine 1812 laid a five inch supply line to a nearby hydrant and supplied Tanker 1819.


Cologne Fire Company units arrived and joined in the suppression activities with Cologne Fire Chief Dave Elkner assuming command. Hamilton Township Rescue Squad was on location and performed rehab duties. The fire is under investigation by the Hamilton Township Police Department and Hamilton Township Fire Official. The Atlantic County HAZMAT Unit was called to the scene due to unidentified liquid containers, which were located on the property.
