Congratulations to Fire News photographer and firefighter
Steve Sperlak for going above and beyond the call of duty at a motor vehicle
accident that occurred on March 25, 2010. Steve and Kevin Jordan a
firefighter from the Elwood Volunteer Fire Company attempted to rescue the
driver of a vehicle that was involved in a serious accident. With smoke
coming emanating from the engine compartment of the vehicle, Steve and Kevin
acted quickly and utilized a crow bar from his work truck to force open the
drivers door in order to remove the victim. Unfortunately, the 17-year-old
driver succumbed to her injuries.
The Township of Mullica commended Steve Sperlak and Kevin Jordan for their
quick actions in trying to save a life. In the photo from left to right is

Heroes Honored in Oceanport

On April 15, 2010, the Oceanport mayor and town council
honored the members of the Oceanport Fire Department for going above and
beyond the call of duty during the severe winter storms on February 25,
2010. Members of the fire department were dispatched at 2258 hours to assist
EMS with a “CPR in progress” call.
Upon arrival at the house, the fire department found that the first aid
squad was delayed. The captain of the first due ladder sent men inside to
continued CPR until EMS and paramedics arrived. Honored members include,
from left to right, Steven Deponte, Second Lieutenant Reiss Pfleger, Chief
Engineer Josh Modlin, Jonathon Ryan, Sean Meenan, Captain Michael Patterson,
Chief Tommy Crochet, First Assistant Chief Patrick Shaffery, and Tom Gallo.

Pompton Lakes Volunteer Fire
Department Holds Installation Dinner

On March 6, 2010, the PLVFD held its installation dinner
at the Tides in North Haledon. George Heflich Sr., President of the NJ State
Firemen’s Association, swore in Chief Dennis Mangin, Assistant Chief Ron
Fusaro, and the rest of the company line officers to their duties.
Congratulations and good luck to the newly appointed officers.
