Hillcrest Runs Working
Industrial
Building Fire

At 0707 hours on the morning of Wednesday, May 26, 2010,
Broome County Communications dispatched Departments 55 (Hillcrest) and 35
(Port Dickinson) to 11 Beckwith Avenue in Hillcrest for a reported Building
Fire. Chief 55 Baker who lives near by arrived on scene before dispatch was
complete and gave a size up of heavy smoke evacuating from the roof vents
with employees confirming a working fire in the rear of the building. Chief
55 Baker immediately requested a second alarm which added Engine 35 and
Brush 35 From Port Dickinson, Engine 39 and Rescue 39 from Chenango Bridge,
Quint 66 from Chenango, Squad 57 from Choconut Center for the F.A.S.T. Team,
Broome County Fire Coordinators, Broome Ambulance, and engine from
Department 59 (Five Mile Point) for standby in Hillcrest's Station.
The building at this address is home to Elliot Manufacturing which produces
power transmission products such as flexible shafts, flexible couplings,
flexible conduits, nylon liners, push pull cable assemblies and valve
controls. This building spans several blocks and is split into multiple
sections with original portions being as much as 100 years old when this
building housed the Larrabee-Deyo Motor Truck Company. For this reason,
Hillcrest and Port Dickinson Fire Departments have preplanned this building
for years.
Pumper-Tanker 35 quickly arrived on scene and was assigned to the attack
with Squad 55 following soon after and was assigned to supplement the
sprinkler system. Employees were able to advise that the sprinkler system
had activated and large amounts of water were flowing across the floor of
the building. Entry crews advanced an 1 3/4 in line in through a rear
entrance and followed directions given by employees to the fire room. as
crews neared the seat of the fire the experience dense black smoke banked
all the way to the floor. The fire room was found to contain a large machine
that spanned most of the room. The hose team quickly knocked down the fire
and used an attic ladder to gain access to the top of the machine.
It was determined that thanks to the activated sprinkler system the actual
fire damage was held to the single room containing the machine. However,
dense black smoke filled the entire building and large amounts of water
flowed through portions of the building. After being sure the fire was
knocked down the sprinkler system was shut down. Crews were then able to
overhaul the machine and found the dense smoke was due to large amounts of
rubber inside the machine. Quint 66 was used to access the roof to check for
any extension but the crew found no extension.
Crews on scene finished overhaul and completed ventilation of the building
while members of the Broome County Fire Investigation Staff worked on the
investigation into the cause of the fire. During the operation the Town of
Fenton Water Department was called to the scene to assist fire crews as the
experienced some issues with low pressure from the municipal hydrant system.
Crews from Hillcrest and Port Dickinson worked very quickly with much
assistance from the building's sprinkler system to extinguish what could
easily have been a disastrous fire. No injuries were reported by civilians
or fire fighters during this incident. All crews were picked up and cleared
the scene by 09:30 hours.
