Early Saturday morning May 29th a fire occurred in
Poughkeepsie. The residence has been the target of several other fires
recently, and the most significant fire heavily damaged a non-attached
garage in the rear. Firefighters arrived to find a heavy fire condition in
the rear of a two and a half- story balloon construction multi-family
residence. Firefighters went to work, advancing lines to the fire area and
also went right to the roof, where they made a trench cut to cut off the
fires spread. At one point, a tall bright blue flame blew out the rear of
the residence, which made firefighters suspect that they may have a gas leak
and thus a gas-fed fire. Crews were evacuated from the building and Central
Hudson Gas crew was requested to the scene. As firefighters waited for the
crew’s arrival, a loud bang was heard from the interior of the structure.
Upon the gas crew’s arrival, they were able to confirm that their was no gas
leak and firefighters once again entered the building. The interior fire was
extinguished, but the fire in the roof area proved to be problematic. The
trench cut stopped the forward spread of the fire as planned, but the
structures mansard roof allowed the fire to travel in the void.
