Brookhaven Technical
Rescue Team Drills at Keyspan Plant

On March 30, 2008, the Brookhaven Technical Rescue Team recently
held a drill at the Port Jefferson Keyspan Power Plant.
Simultaneously, two rescue scenarios took place at the plant.
One scenario involved a rescue dummy that had a crushed pelvis
due to a heavy piece of equipment that had fallen. The scenario
required the use of air bags to lift the heavy object, so that
EMT’s could remove and treat the victim.
At the same time, a second scenario took place on one of the
upper floors of the plant. Rescuers had to locate an unconscious
victim in poorly lit conditions. Once the victim was found, it
was determined that the victim was in cardiac arrest. The victim
was quickly “packaged” and removed to an awaiting ambulance.
Finally, members of the team took the opportunity to rappel from
upper floors of the plant to the ground below. It is comforting
to know that the Brookhaven Technical Rescue Task Force is ready
to respond to special emergency situations should the need
arise.
