PWC Rescue Training
Takes Place
in Somerset

In June, Chief Mike Lesik led the Somerset
Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company Number One, in a Personal
Water Craft training class. Instructors Butch Hendricks and
Brian Duffer from Lifeguard Systems in Shokan, New York came to
Somerset in Franklin Township.
The classroom training took place on Thursday night. Butch
Hendricks spoke about PWC safety and rescue. On Saturday and
Sunday, SVFRC#1 headed to the water with their new PWC's and
their boats. Saturday was spent taking turns learning how the
PWC's operated and maneuvered with two rescuers aboard. All 26
members that attended the class got their chance to be the
operator and the rescuer. Participants learned how to switch
seating while the PWC's were moving through the water. They also
learned how to climb back on board from the water.
On Sunday, the class hooked up their Rescue Boards to the back
of their PWC's and learned how to maneuver the vessel with the
board and the weight of a rescuer in tow. Additional maneuvers
such as coming along side a victim, grabbing the victim,
removing the victim from the water onto the rescue board to
safety were practiced.
SVFRC#1 also had two of their boats in the water for additional
training and also for safety during the class. SVFRC#1 would
like to thank Butch and Brian from Lifeguard Systems for their
great instruction!

Tanker Drill Held in
Jefferson Twp.

Jefferson Township held a water supply drill
using tankers (water tenders) and engines to supply two 95 foot
tower ladders along with deck gun operations. The drill supplied
over 1500 gallons per minute for over one hour. It took over a
dozen tankers and engines, along with 100 firefighters to do the
job. Some of the newest apparatus were brought to the drill,
such as Picatinny Arsenal's engine, and Newton’s tanker. This
year Jefferson's fireboat was used to assist in the drafting
operation, in the event of a mechanical breakdown occurred or
another water source was needed. Three counties were involved in
the drill from Essex, Morris, and Sussex Counties. The officers
and members of Jefferson Township Company Number Two would like
to thank everyone who attended the drill.

Jefferson Fire Dept
hosts Tri County Tanker Shuttle Drill

On July 20, 2008 Jefferson Township Fire Co #
2 hosted a multi-agency Water Tender Shuttle Drill. Fifteen Fire
departments from three counties including Morris, Sussex and
Essex, participated in the drill. Tankers and Engines used a
local draft site located in the Lake Forrest section of
Jefferson Twp to supply enough water to fill four drafting pools
which in turn provided water to Rockaway's 95 foot tower ladder
and Roxbury's 102 foot tower. This continuous loop was sustained
for just over an hour and supplied over 1500 gallons per minute.
This drill was the first of it's kind to utilize the MIRS
(Morris Integrated Radio System) as it's main source for
communication. Over 100 firefighters from Milton, Newton, Mount
Arlington, Budd Lake, Mount Hope, Rockaway, Mine Hill, Marcella,
Wharton, Highland Lakes, Byram, Boonton Twp, Picatinny, Essex
Fells took part in the training drill.
