
On Friday, May 23, the Westbury
Fire Department was toned out for a motor vehicle accident with
possible overturn at the intersection of Route 25 and Old
Westbury Road in Old Westbury. The Westbury Fire Department
arrived on scene moments later with an ambulance, heavy rescue
and crew of firefighters. The Westbury Fire Department crews
began an extrication operation including vehicle stabilization
and hydraulic tool operations to remove the driver’s door to
extricate the trapped driver. Westbury crews utilized cribbing
and airbags to stabilize the vehicle that was resting on top of
an SUV. The crew also utilized their hydraulic spreaders and
cutters to free the trapped driver by removing the car door.
Also assisting was the Nassau County Police Department and
Police Ambulance Bureau. NCPD EMS transported the driver of one
of the vehicles in the accident while the Westbury Fire
Department transported the extricated driver. A third vehicle, a
van, was also involved in the accident. Also called mutual aid
to the scene was the Carle Place Fire Department, which
responded with its rescue pumper.

Riverhead MVA

On Tuesday, May 20, 2008, the Riverhead
Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to an MVA located at the
Empire Gas Station at the corner of Route 58, &Osborn Avenue.
Riverhead Fire Department's Heavy Rescue Unit was also
dispatched to extricate one of the occupants from one of the
vehicles. Two persons were transported by ambulance to Peconic
Bay Medical Center with back and head injuries. Riverhead Police
are investigating.

Bethpage four-car
accident


On June 2, 2008, the Bethpage Fire Department
responded to a four-car accident on Boundary Avenue just east of
Route 135.One man was trapped in the car, and firefighters used
an extrication tool to remove the front and back doors on the
driver’s side and the cutters to remove the center post. The man
was then removed and transported to a local hospital. One other
person was also transported to the hospital and two refused
medical attention at the scene.

car versus tree

The Garden City Fire
Department responded to this car versus tree on the morning of
Thursday, June 5, 2008, along Rockaway Avenue. The driver lost
control of his vehicle on a curve in the road and slammed into a
nearby tree. Although partially trapped for a short time, the
driver escaped with minor injuries.

Six Injured in
Greenlawn Crash

Six people suffered
minor injuries following a three-vehicle collision on Manor Road
North and Clay Pitts Road in Greenlawn, Sunday, May 18, 2008.
The Greenlawn Fire Department responded with three ambulances
and a heavy rescue truck, with 25 firefighters under the
direction of Chief Scott Demarest and Second Assistant Chief
Scott Dalrymple. Three adults and three children were
transported to Huntington Hospital for treatment by the
Greenlawn FD Rescue Squad.

Hempstead two car
collision


On Sunday, June 15, 2008, at 2056 hours the
East Williston Fire Department was dispatched via Firecom along
with an ambulance from Williston Fire Department Rescue to the
scene of a motor vehicle accident on Roslyn Road with cross
streets of Hewlett Drive and Robbins Drive. Upon arrival at the
scene, Chief Paul Walters and Second Asst. Chief Patrick
Theodore found the SUV to be over turned. WPFD responded to the
scene and with help from EWFD Medical Technicians extricated the
driver ( the only occupant of the vehicle ) and transported the
victim to Winthrop Hospital for treatment. EWFD with the help of
Nassau County Police Department ESU then turned the SUV over and
pushed it to the side of the road to be made safe and stabilized
until it could be towed.

North Amityville MVA

On Wednesday, June 4, 2008, the North
Amityville Fire Company responded to an MVA with a report of a
car fire at New Highway and Cassata Court. On arrival units
found that a small fire had been knocked down with an
extinguisher. The two drivers of the vehicles were transported
to Good Samaritan Hospital with non-life threatening injuries by
North Amityville and North Lindenhurst who sent one ambulance to
the scene.

Manorville
Extrication


On Thursday June 12, 2008, the
Manorville Fire Department had just finished up with a Fire
School Classon Vehicle Extrication. Just 15 minutes after the
end of that class, Manorville was activated for an MVA on County
Road 111 and the Long Island Expressway South Service Road.
Chief Tom Campanaro and First Assistant Chief Chuck Hambsch were
first on scene. Second Assistant Chief Elio Zaparratta arrived
moments later. Manorville Heavy Rescue 5-16-1 arrived on scene
and was informed that two vehicles, one with two victims
trapped. Captain Chris Steel and his crew stabilized the vehicle
and started extrication of the driver’s side front and rear
door, B Pillar, and roof. The driver was pinned under the dash,
so a dash lift was performed to allow the crew to remove the
driver. The passenger was airlifted via SCPD Helicopter. Victim
stabilization was performed by FF Matt Thomas and Manorville
Ambulance.
